Who we are
The Smallweeds are Jim Walsh (guitar and vocals), Grace Walsh (guitar, vocals, drums and keys) and Bob Tipping (accordion). We play a mix of original songs in the folk/singer-songwriter tradition as well as some of our favorite covers – think artists like Wilco, Mazzy Star, Tom Waits and John Prine.
The name comes from a family of peculiar characters in the Dickens novel Bleak House. The members of this family are hilarious and a tad sinister – just like the band. And for those unfamiliar with the book, they’ll just think we’re a small patch of weeds (or patch of small weeds). That works too.

Our first album, Release the Moon, will release on May 24! It’ll be available on most streaming platforms and we’ll do a small run of CD’s for the old school or hardcore fan. Get those ears ready!!

Here come the Weeds…
Here we are in late spring, a perfect time for taking stock of the past and for new growth. With that thought in mind, we’re launching a new band – The Smallweeds. Like all weeds, it has grown organically over the past few years. Efforts that featured the full ensemble, not just Jim, cried out for a moniker more reflective of the group dynamic. Of course, many names were entertained. Top competitors included Brick Chicken and Unborn Spouse, to name but a couple. But The Smallweeds prevailed, mostly because Jim is such a Dickens fan and gets to be the decider. We hope you’ll embrace the new band name. If familiar with our shows, previously under “Jim Walsh Band” or “Jim Walsh Trio,” we hope you’ll look forward to upcoming gigs by “the Weeds.” For those new to our music, we hope the new name entices you to check us out. Here’s to new beginnings!
